SINGLE REVIEW: Antagonist by Nova Twins

It's no secret that here at the Coven we're big fans of the trailblazing Nova Twins. So it's no surprise that we're eating up the experimental rock duo's new track Antagonist, Nova Twins' first single since their debut album Who Are The Girls? from last year.

We've been following the South London pair for a few years since seeing them share the stage with the almighty Black Honey back in 2018. After naming their debut album Who Are The Girls? one of our best releases of 2020, we've been buzzing in anticipation of Nova Twins' next steps in their world domination.

Who Are The Girls? saw Nova Twins explode onto the rock scene, deservedly gaining praise for their brutal genre-defying noise-rock. The duo have gone on to collab with the likes of Fever 333, Dream Wife, and Bring Me The Horizon, and have been using their voices to champion diversity and POC representation within the alternative industry. Fresh off a UK arena tour with rock heavyweights Bring Me The Horizon and You Me At Six, Georgia South (bass) and Amy Love (vocals/guitar) are ready to unleash their first slice of new music onto us.

"Antagonist is a defiant tune about self-belief, how you can summon the inner strength to be ready for whatever comes at you," comment Nova Twins on the new release.

Antagonist doesn't hold anything back. Bursting open with a Nova Twins' signature crunchy bassline and frenzied drums, it immediately hooks you in with Amy Love's fiery vocals. The chorus is scorching hot - a melding of heavy guitar slashing, and electronic distortion. It's incredible that so much devilish noise can come from a duo armed with a guitar, a bass, and a set of killer lungs. The track elevates Nova Twins' vibrant punk-infested grunge-rock soundscape of their debut album and proves that the pair still have so much more to show us - and we can't fucking wait to see it.

"It's the army that surrounds you wherever you go," explain Nova Twins. "The entire song was pulled together during a jam session. Having spent all of lockdown writing tracks remotely over computers, it was really exciting to capture this spontaneous energy together in the studio, as well as the nuances coming from our boards. We made sure not to lose any of this magic on the record."

You heard it here first: a new Nova Twins album is already on the way. Georgia and Amy have been working with Marshall Records to record their currently unannounced second album. Even though Who Are The Girls? still features heavily on our rotation, and remains one of the most exciting records of 2020, we're giddy at the knowledge that Nova Twins have no plans of slowing down and are already ready to hit us with some fresh delicious alt-rock ragers.

Nova Twins head on UK tours with Enter Shikari and Sleaford Mods later this year, before headlining their own UK shows in early 2022. Check out all of Nova Twins' upcoming shows here - you can trust us when we say they're well worth seeing live!

In the meantime, go get Antagonist streaming on a loop and gear up for a new incoming Nova Twins record!
