SINGLE(s) REVIEW: pg.4 a picture of three hedges/through your window by julie
LA-based grunge three-piece and design collective julie have just blessed us with two new singles, pg.4 a picture of three hedges/through your window. This is the first we've heard from the group since last year's independently-released EP pushing daisies, which has very deservedly amassed millions of plays across streaming platforms, and features the stand-out tracks skipping tiles and april's-bloom. If you hate bloody brilliant music, look away now.
It's rare to find a band that can so perfectly bottle-up everything we love about alt-rock, but julie have it nailed. From disgustingly filthy riffs to snarling basslines and haunting harmonies, everything is spot on.
pg.4 a picture of 3 hedges has a modest intro, but at 25 seconds in expect a face-melting experience. Keyan's breezy vocals are central to the track, providing the ultimate contrast to the deliciously-heavy layered instrumentals. It builds in intensity throughout - this isn't a 2 minute ripper, it's 4 minutes of 90s nostalgia peppered with modern surprises that'll keep you guessing.
through your window quickly creates a distinct sense of foreboding, with a more angsty vocal performance from Alex. Dillon's unabating drums keep the ghost-train rolling steadily towards impending doom, before creeping us to a stop. It honestly feels like there should be a jump-scare at the end of this song. You know that here at the Coven, we like to keep things on the slightly sinister side, and the uneasy vibes of this one are getting us a little bit too excited for darker autumn days.
These two tracks balance each other out perfectly while both providing that signature julie sound we've come to love - and we might be getting greedy, but we can't fucking wait to gobble up more nasty tunes from this lot.
julie haven't just been focusing on studio recordings either - having previously supported DIIV in the US, they'll also be heading out with Panchiko later this year. The band will make their US and UK headline debut this summer, as well as an appearance at All Points East in London - so you've no fucking excuse not to get on these guys. And keep your eyes peeled, because they'll be announcing more dates soon!
