SINGLE REVIEW: Seize the Power by YONAKA
We've got the start of another brand new era for you, this time courtesy of Brighton rockers YONAKA. The 4-piece have returned with the first single since their debut album: their empowering and unifying tune, Seize The Power.
Warning: If you're old enough, the start of this track may leave you feeling nostalgic for some kind of PS1 fantasy game with its dramatically atmospheric choral sampling. The anthemic tune hits you with lead singer Theresa’s urgent spoken-word, which will have you hooked from the get-go. She's had enough of her own bullshit and is embracing the power that comes from taking accountability for your own life - it's real hot girl shit, and a whole-ass mood. Sonically, Seize the Power takes a bit of a different direction to Don't Wait 'Til Tomorrow, but it feels like a perfectly natural progression from the first album. It's very grandson-esque in its rock n roll sensibilities - with more of a hip hop beat and pristine pop production values - but don't worry, there's still a dirty riff in there for good measure.
Produced by the band themselves, they have said of the track: "We are so excited for the world to hear Seize The Power. It’s been so long since we released new music and the time has finally come; this is a new chapter for us. We want you to get lost in a feeling of strength and empowerment when listening to this song.” This single is just the beginning of what’s to come from the raucous four-piece this year.
When they met at Brighton uni, vocalist Theresa Jarvis, bassist Alex Crosby, drummer Rob Mason and guitarist George Werbrouck-Edwards instantly jelled, quickly building their name with raucous live sets and a seamless merging of pop, rock and hip-hop inspired beats.
2019 saw YONAKA release their banging debut album, Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow, which has racked up a ridiculous 58 million streams on Spotify. Since its release, the band have been holed up in their Brighton home studio honing their craft, and finally had the time to create the music they've always wanted to.
YONAKA have cut their teeth on the live scene over the last couple of years, supporting the likes of international heavyweights Bring Me The Horizon and playing prestigious festivals such Reading & Leeds, Bestival, Download and Isle Of Wight. Their upcoming dates (hopefully) include joining Catfish And The Bottlemen in Swansea on May 29th, as well as Sonic Wave on the 30th, and 110 Above Festival in August - so keep your eyes peeled!
